- BRIEF STD SYNOPTICAL INFORMATION FOLLOWS BELOW. THE SESC
- DAT
- THIS REPORT WAS COMPILED.
-
- Solar activity was low. There were very few flares of
- interest. The largest was a C3.6 event at 01/2230Z.
-
- Solar activity forecast: solar activity is expected to be
- generally low. Additional C-class flares are expected.
-
- The geomagnetic field was quiet to unsettled over the last
- 24 hours. A few high-latitude regions saw periods of active
- conditions during the local night hours.
-
- Geophysical activity forecast: the geomagnetic field is
- expected to be remain mostly quiet to occasionally unsettled

- SYNOPSIS OF ACT
- --------------------
-
- Solar activity was low. Region 7682 (S18W40) continued to
- develop slowly. This region produced several small flares, the
- largest being a C6/SF at 03/0210Z. Growth in Region 7680
- (S12E13) has slowed. New Region 7684 (S08E25) was numbered.
-
- Solar activity forecast: solar activity is expected to be
- low. C-class flares are expected in Region 7682.
-
- The geomagnetic field ranged from quiet to severe storm.
- Major storm conditions were observed at middle latitudes
- from 0900-1200Z. Major to severe conditions were observed
- at high latitudes from 0600-1200Z. There is no obvious cause
- for this short-lived disturbance.
-
- Geophysical activity forecast: the geomagnetic field is
- expected to be quiet to unsettled for the next several hours,
- becoming active to storm due to a coronal hole.
-
- Event probabilities 04 mar-06 mar
-
- Class M 01/01/01
- Class X 01/01/01
- Proton 01/01/01

-
- B. High Latitudes
- Active 30/35/35
- Minor Storm 25/15/15
- Major-Severe Storm 05/15/15
-
- HF propagation conditions were below-normal over the high
- and latitude paths. Low and middle latitudes saw near-normal
- propagation. Conditions are expected to deteriorate on 05 and
- 06 March due to effects from a well-placed coronal hole.
- Transpolar and transauroral circuits could see moderate signal
- degradation (to poor and occasionally very poor levels). Upper
- middle latitude paths are also expected to see minor signal
- degradation during this anticipated disturbance.

- This indeed can be one interpretation of the events and I am sure it
- will now be the predominant one. The entire argument stems from the
- belief that the original format violated ARRL copyright in two areas
- and that the material in the directory is shows sufficient
- "originality" to merit a copyright. On both points, I have heard
- arguments on both sides. Prior to the initial posting of the

- The ARRL disagrees.
-
- In any case, I believe that there is a quote about hindsight and 20/20
- might be appropriate.
-
- I have been receiving sporadic flames (although far fewer than notes of
- encouragement) over this project ever since it began. At first it was
- about the attitudes toward possible inaccurate listings. Now it
- appears that the new flames will be over my interpretation of a letter
- from a lawyer. Since you are so omniscient of the wishes of others,
- would you care to take over the running of the project? I am getting
- a bit tired of it. I started this thing as a VOLUNTEER project that I

- I want to thank everyone for their recommendations.
- In summary, except for a few very minor complaints
- (ex. somewhat flimsy "less used" button door, rig
- bigger than most, VFO knob a bit sensitive) the Yaesu

- I think there was a swing novelty tune from this era called "Mr 5 by 5"

- Been there, done that. My Congressman ignored my letter. The law didn't pass on

- Amen to the long, long time. I just tuned up my old BC220 table-top scanner.

- Yup. These laws, if I'm not misinformed, are unique in recent history in that
- up until their enactment, it was legal to listen to any waves passing through
- your home, as long as you didn't act on or disclose what you heard. You are
- now a criminal if you choose to *tune in* to these particular band segments,
- regardless of what you do with what you hear. More such laws will follow,
- since government and regulations never shrink in size.
